Last Challengers: Korobov, Rameshbabu and a pair of Czech players

28 Jan 2024

Last Challengers: Korobov, Rameshbabu, and a pair of Czech players The final four names to complete the Challengers line-up have been revealed. The Prague Festival will welcome Anton Korobov and Vaishali Rameshbabu. Representing Czechia will be two additional players: Richard Stalmach and Štěpán Hrbek.

Anton Korobov, currently competing in the Challengers category in the renowned Wijk aan Zee, is a four-time Ukrainian champion. He was awarded an individual gold medal for his performance at the World Team Chess Championship in 2013, which contributed to the bronze for his team. In the same year, he also secured victory in the European Blitz Chess Championship.

The line-up consists of nine men and one woman: Indian player Vaishali Rameshbabu, the sister of Praggnanandhaa. Vaishali realized her long-term dream by receiving a GM norm at the beginning of last year. She became the third woman in India to gain the GM title and together with her brother Praggnanandhaa they have become the first sibling pair with the GM title. They are also the very first sibling pair who has qualified for the Candidates Tournament.

The Czech Republic will be represented in the Challengers tournament by 17-year-old Richard Stalmach, who’s attending PICF for the second time. In the previous year, he secured 9th place. Stalmach had a successful start to his representation career, participating in the Czech team at the European Team Chess Championship and achieving a historic feat by finishing in 5th place.

Another Czech player in attendance is Štěpán Hrbek, turning 18 this year and accumulating experience from various tournaments, including the World Junior Chess Championship 2023, where he claimed the 20th spot. Vojtěch Plát, the winner of the Open tournament last year, will not participate this year after discussions with the organizers.

We send a warm invitation to every fan to visit the Don Giovanni Hotel Prague, which will host the Prague International Chess Festival from February 26 to March 7, 2024, and remind those contemplating participation that the Open and rating tournaments registrations are open until 15th February.
