Viswanathan Anand at the Festival

09 Jan 2024

A very special guest is going to pay a visit to the Prague International Chess Festival. He is the 15th world champion and the current deputy president of FIDE, Viswanathan Anand. The very important guest of the Festival, a chess legend whose career and strong personality inspire the players from all over the world, and have caused the chess boom in India, will assume the role of the Futures tournament Ambassador.

The Futures tournament has been held during the Festival since 2020. Young participants play on the main stage side by side with the top GMs from Masters and Challengers tournaments. They have the same dress code, analyze the games in the common room and they give interviews either in their native tongue or in English. Simply everything ready for the great experience that may motivate the players to continue their hard chess work. This year’s lineup includes five girls and five boys. The longest way is ahead for a 11-year-old talent from India, Aansh Nandan Nerurkar, and other players come from Turkey, Germany, Poland, Greece and Slovakia. Czechia will be represented by three girls: Tamae Severina Jakubše, Sofiia Markina, and Zuzana Stará.

Exciting events are ahead for the young stars. Except for the traditional ceremonial drawing when each Futures player draws a Masters tournament GM to pair up with, they will also personally meet the Ambassador. During the training session, Vishy Anand will go through several games of his rich and successful career with the younglings. The Indian star is one of the five players to reach a 2800+ rating, the first player to win each of the biggest 3 supertournaments, i. e. Wijk aan Zee, Linares, and Dortmund. He is also the player who was the world #1 player for 21 months and the champion ruling the chess world in 2007–2013.

Vishy Anand will spend three days at the Festival. We send a warm invitation to every fan to visit the Don Giovanni Hotel Prague, which will host the Prague International Chess Festival from February 26 to March 7, 2024, and remind those contemplating participation that the Open and rating tournaments registrations are open until 15th February.
